LEMMINKÄINEN WINS THREE CONTRACTS FOR LKAB IN NORTHERN SWEDEN

Lemminkäinen’s cooperation with Swedish mining company LKAB is continuing, with three construction and plant projects in the Malmfälten mining area in Northern Sweden. The projects’ total value is roughly 14 million euros.

Comprising the construction of a new pelletizing conveyor in Svappavaara, a new tailings transport chute at the Kiruna mine and a new flue gas purification plant at the pellet plant in Malmberget, the projects started early this year.

The pelletizing conveyor project comprises earthworks, concrete works, a steel frame, outer walls and roof for a new industrial plant. The project is due for completion in September 2012.

At the Kiruna mine, Lemminkäinen will build a 600-metre transport chute for tailings, to facilitate the removal of wastewater generated in production. This project, comprising a weir and concrete works, will run until October 2012.

A flue gas purification plant, for purifying gases originating in production, will be constructed at the pellet plant in Malmberget. This project comprises earthworks, concrete works, a steel frame, outer walls and a roof. The estimated month of completion is January 2013.

Lemminkäinen is currently working on work tunnel excavation contracts for LKAB’s Kiruna iron ore mine in Sweden. Ordered in 2010, this project totals around EUR 55 million in value. LKAB, owned by the Swedish Government, operates three mines in Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget. LKAB is Sweden’s leading refiner of iron ore products and was its eighth-largest export company in 2010. The value of its exports is more than 2.6 billion euros in total.
