YIT and the City of Turku have agreed on additional works for the Kupittaa Core partnership project in Turku, to be carried out as a scope extension to the ongoing infrastructure project. The additional works include the construction of streets, public areas, water supply and other municipal infrastructure, complementing the ongoing infrastructure project and the construction of the Taito Campus. The works will begin in October 2026 and are scheduled for completion by the end of September 2028, together with the overall project schedule.

As part of the additional works, Helsinginkatu will be realigned to the current location of Teollisuuskatu. The existing road will be transformed from a motor vehicle street into a boulevard-style urban street with plenty of space for pedestrians and cyclists.

“The realignment of Helsinginkatu and its transformation into a green boulevard will give the area a more city-centre-like character and make it more pleasant. At the same time, it will improve the accessibility of the area together with the other solutions included in the infrastructure project. The street’s new alignment and change in the urban landscape will make it an impressive gateway to Turku. At the same time, new opportunities for land use will be created on both sides of the street,” says Jyrki Lappi, Director of Urban Development, City of Turku.

The works will be coordinated with the public transport deck, the parking facility, the Taito Campus, and subsequent construction phases of the area. The overall project also includes temporary solutions to ensure functional connections during construction and to avoid constructing permanent structures too early in areas whose environment will still change in later phases.

The overall project also includes street and traffic arrangements related to the Kalevanramppi road ramp, as well as the water infrastructure and other municipal infrastructure serving them. In addition, a new Ilmattarenpuisto park will be built, adding greenery to the area and helping to create an urban environment that is as complete and pleasant as possible already during the phased construction.

“Kupittaa Core’s smooth progress is an example of how a well-functioning alliance model supports project development, planning, and coordination of works based on shared objectives. The realignment of Helsinginkatu and the related street, traffic, and municipal infrastructure solutions form a technically demanding whole in which we can utilise YIT’s extensive expertise in infrastructure and urban construction,” said Aleksi Laine, Executive Vice President, Infra segment at YIT.

The Kupittaa Core Partnership Project is one of Turku’s most significant urban development projects. It connects the Kupittaa and Itäharju districts into a vibrant core for the area and strengthens the position of Turku Science Park as one of Finland’s most significant centres for growth. The parties to the alliance are the City of Turku, YIT, Lundén Architecture and Renell Käppi Architects. The City of Turku is represented in the alliance by Turku Technology and Science Park Ltd.
