The circular economy brick developed for the Circular economy block for lifelong learning project has received the prestigious Sustainability Deed of the Year award from the Finland Chamber of Commerce. This innovative building material, which is made from 40% recycled materials such as sanitary porcelain and recycled glass, represents sustainable and environmentally friendly construction.

The circular economy brick was created in close collaboration with YIT, the Yrjö and Hanna Foundation, ARK-house Architects, AINS Group, Iittala and Wienerberger as part of the circular economy block for lifelong learning project in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki. In the absence of suitable façade material, the project team developed a circular economy solution that meets the quality requirements of the CE marking. This innovation reduces the need for new raw materials, saves natural resources and reduces carbon dioxide emissions from brick manufacture.

The circular economy brick is already part of the Wienerberger’s product range, and its impact is widespread: it provides construction operators with a model for developing more sustainable material solutions and for putting the principles of the circular economy into practice. In the Circular economy block project, the brick is a central part of the circular economy concept, which covers the entire life cycle of the building until demolition.

"The Sustainability Deed of the Year award is an important recognition, which encourages us to continue our development work and strengthens our commitment to sustainable construction even further," said Antti Inkilä, EVP, Housing, YIT.
