Engineering students have ranked YIT as the most ideal construction industry employer in Universum’s Student Survey 2023 for the fifth consecutive time. On the ranking list of ideal technology industry employers, YIT reached fifth place. A total of 3,226 engineering students responded to the survey. YIT has also been ranked as the ideal construction industry employer among highly educated professionals in Universum’s Professionals Survey for three consecutive years.

YIT will provide summer jobs and internships for about 600 young people this year. In 2022, YIT offered permanent jobs to about 100 trainees in Finland.

“We offer summer jobs and trainee opportunities for young people that correspond to their studies and systematically develop their skills. We also want to invest in an excellent trainee experience. To this end, we designate a tutor for each trainee for the duration of their traineeship,” says Katja Ahlstedt, Executive Vice President, Human Resources at YIT Group.

Permanent jobs for 100 students in 2022

YIT considers it important that young people get employed in the construction industry. Summer jobs and traineeships give young people industry experience, while providing the company with the opportunity to train new professionals and get new perspectives on business.

For over a decade now, the YIT Path training programme has provided a goal-driven path to a profession, especially for construction industry students but also for young people from other academic backgrounds. Last year, YIT had a total of approximately 650 trainees, of whom about 100 students were offered permanent jobs during the year.

“During their trainee periods, the students who participate in the YIT Path programme gain a lot of practical experience and guidance from experienced professionals, but they are also assigned independent responsibilities and duties that help them build their skills. Once they have completed the YIT Path programme, they are very well prepared to enter working life and take on significant responsibilities,” says Thomas Finell, Head of Talent Attraction at YIT.

In addition to offering permanent jobs to a significant number of trainees each year, the company offers hourly work to some students during the academic year.

The significance of the working community

The Student Survey also included questions on the key attributes associated with employers. Among the attributes in the people and culture category, the respondents rated “a friendly work environment” as the most important, as was the case last year. “Respect for its people” was rated as the second-most important attribute.

In YIT’s trainee feedback survey in 2022, 99% of the respondents said they are willing to recommend YIT as an employer to friends, 97% would like to continue working at YIT, and 93% said they felt like being a part of the work crew.

It is vital for us that trainees enjoy being part of our working community and have a successful and safe trainee experience. Our excellent trainee feedback also indicates that, together with colleagues, supervisors and other members of our personnel, we can provide students with a responsibly managed path to the construction industry that gives them access to an interesting career,” Thomas Finell concludes.

YIT aims to offer summer jobs or trainee positions to approximately 600 students in 2023.
