YIT STARTS TO BUILD COVER OVER MOTORWAY 3 IN HÄMEENLINNA, FINLAND

YIT and the City of Hämeenlinna have signed a procurement agreement for constructing a cover over Motorway 3 in Hämeenlinna, Finland. This extensive contract includes earthmoving, road building, tunnelling and bridge building work as well as other construction work. The total value of the procurement agreement now signed is about EUR 29 million, of which the share of technical systems — tunnel equipment and telematics, i.e. geographical information systems — is more than EUR 5 million.

The contract for covering the motorway consists of two parts. YIT applies the ST model (short for the Finnish words meaning plan and implement) to the tunnel and telematics between the Paasikiventie and Turuntie roads as well as the construction of a new junction ramp and additional lanes for the highway. For the other part, YIT applies the KU model (short for the Finnish word meaning total contract), and it includes the refurbishment of the Paasikiventie and Turuntie bridges in Hämeenlinna as well as modification of road structures in the Paasikiventie, Eureninkatu, Turuntie and Kaivokatu roads. In addition, the modification work for the public utilities conduits under these roads, including all accessories and equipment, was included in the contract.

The location – amidst Hämeenlinna’s urban traffic and a bypass – and coordinating several simultaneous construction phases pose specific challenges to the implementation of the contract.

”YIT has plenty of experience in extensive road projects. For example, we will be able to utilise the lessons learnt from our award-winning Kehä I ring road and tunnel project with regard to traffic flow and tunnel telematics in this project. Our aim is to minimise the inconvenience caused to the residents of Hämeenlinna from the construction work and ensure the flow of traffic during the project,” says Risto Kanervo, head of the Bridge Construction unit.

The project will also implement the latest tunnel construction technology and technical systems that will improve the safety of road users and mitigate damages in possible accident situations. The construction work for covering the motorway will begin in September 2011, and the project will be completed in phases during spring 2013.
