LEMMINKÄINEN TO BUILD TWO SCHOOLS IN HOLLOLA WITH THE PPP MODEL

Lemminkäinen will build two schools in Hollola, in southern Finland: the Heinsuo twelve-year school and the Kalliola school, with the PPP model. The construction of both schools will begin immediately, and the aim is to take the buildings into use in the autumn of 2017. The total value of the projects is nearly EUR 50 million.

The contract includes the design and construction of the schools. Lemminkäinen will also be liable for the buildings’ maintenance, upkeep, user services and basic renovation investments during the service contract for the service period of 20 years.

The Heinsuo twelve-year school will accommodate approximately 700 students, with a gross area of 8,800 square metres. The Kalliola school will accommodate approximately 500 students, with a gross area of 7,100 square metres.

“When building schools with the PPP model, we combine the architectural and pedagogic planning. We want to create a motivating and stimulating learning environment for both students and teachers,” says Pauli Mäkelä, Executive Vice President, Building construction, Finland.

“The new schools in Hollola are built for the municipality’s increasing needs and they will crucially decrease difficult indoor air quality problems. It is also important that the future premises support the national curricula of the Finnish National Board of Education, to enter into force in 2016, and give young people an opportunity to benefit from an open learning environment and phenomenon-based learning,” says Tuomo Vesikko, Property Centre Manager of the municipality of Hollola.

Lemminkäinen is currently building a school with the PPP model also in Pudasjärvi, in northern Finland. The same model was used in the Kastelli community centre completed last autumn in Oulu and four schools and a day-care centre built in Kuopio during 2011–2013.
