Lemminkäinen to build underground facilities for Finnish Parliament

LEMMINKÄINEN TO BUILD UNDERGROUND FACILITIES FOR FINNISH PARLIAMENT

The Finnish Parliament's Office Commission decided in its meeting held on 24 May 2012 to launch interior finishing work for the construction of underground facilities. Based on tenders, Lemminkäinen was chosen as the main contractor for the work. The project is valued at close to EUR 28 million. Construction is expected to begin in June and be completed by summer 2014.

From 2011 to 2012, Lemminkäinen demolished old structures on the underground premises and excavated the bedrock for additional space. The new underground facilities will accommodate primarily the Parliament's logistics functions, such as goods reception, intermediate storage and waste handling. They will also include sizable archive rooms, a cleaning centre and room for facilities management.

The underground facilities are part of the Parliament House's renovations, which are expected to be completed by 2017.

"The project is a natural continuation to the underground construction projects we have carried in the surroundings of the Parliament buildings. It strengthens Lemminkäinen's reputation as an expert in underground construction and shows how city centers can be expanded underground," says Director Jouko Viitala from Lemminkäinen.
