A BRIDGE BUILT BY LEMMINKÄINEN WINS AN AWARD

Auroransilta, a bridge for pedestrians and light traffic built by Lemminkäinen in Helsinki, was presented with the RIL award bestowed by the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers in its annual competition.

”The bridge is a post-tensioned, arched steel bridge with a thin decking. Its horizontal geometry and foundation work required a high level of expertise from us. The main gap of the bridge is supported by drawbars, which our own work crew installed and tensioned,” comments Mikko Immonen, Regional Director at Lemminkäinen. ”The fact that the work site was situated next to a street with heavy traffic added to the challenge. We are highly satisfied that, in general, traffic ran smoothly during the entire construction phase, causing no major disturbances. This was achieved through careful planning and seamless co-operation between the various parties engaged in the project”.

Commissioned by the Public Works Department of the City of Helsinki, the bridge was planned by WSP Finland. The steel components of the bridge were manufactured and installed by Ruukki, a steel manufacturer, which also treated the components with a surface finish. The bridge will be open to traffic in November.

The RIL award is presented annually by the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers to construction projects whose planning and implementation demonstrate outstanding expertise in construction engineering. Besides technology, the criteria of the award take account of economical, social and environmental considerations. The award has been presented since 1972.
