LEMMINKÄINEN WINS THE KOIVUSAARI EXCAVATION PROJECT FOR WEST METRO
Lemminkäinen has won the excavation project for Koivusaari, which will form part of the West Metro. The project comprises the excavation of the Koivusaari station and Katajaharju shaft, located west of Lauttasaari, and a two-kilometre metro tunnel from the Katajaharju shaft to the border of Espoo. The total value of the contract is slightly over EUR 22 million.
The Koivusaari metro tunnel and station will be built partly under the sea, which makes it a technically challenging project. A significant part of the project is foundation engineering, including dredging for the foundation of, and construction of, a blasted rock embankment in the sea.
"This challenging project provides an excellent opportunity for us to combine Lemminkäinen's strengths in both rock engineering and foundation engineering", said Risto Kupila, Vice President, Rock Engineering.
Work at Koivusaari will begin in June after the excavation of a construction tunnel has been completed. The excavation of the actual metro tunnel and station will be completed in early 2013. At present, Lemminkäinen is finalising the first West Metro tunnel project in Ruoholahti. The work will be completed by June.
