Lemminkäinen to start Western Metro tunnel excavations

LEMMINKÄINEN TO START WESTERN METRO TUNNEL EXCAVATIONS

Lemminkäinen Group's Lemminkäinen Infra Oy has been awarded the first contract
of the Western Metro construction project. Lemminkäinen Infra will excavate two
800-metre-long track tunnels between Ruoholahti metro station and
Salmisaarenranta as well as an access tunnel. The combined length of the
tunnels will be 1,900 metres. The contract is worth approximately EUR 10
million. 

"This is the first and most challenging of the ten tunnel contracts that will
be carried out in the Western Metro project. Because half of the excavation
work will be done in the zone affected by existing metro traffic, the contract
will require special care and precise timetables," says Risto Kupila, the
Director of Rock Engineering at Lemminkäinen Infra. 

The contract will have a fairly minor impact on Ruoholahti's residents and
traffic. The public will be kept informed of possible effects throughout the
project. Work will begin in November 2009 and the contract will be completed in
May 2011.
