Lemminkäinen to carry out pedestrianisation works on the street of Keskuskatu in Helsinki

LEMMINKÄINEN TO CARRY OUT PEDESTRIANISATION WORKS ON THE STREET OF KESKUSKATU
IN HELSINKI 

Lemminkäinen Group's Lemminkäinen Betonituote Oy is to carry out
pedestrianisation works on the street of Keskuskatu in Helsinki. The works will
include the laying of natural stone pavements as well as the installation of
underground heating and surface water drainage systems. The street area
involved in the contract is about 10,000 m². 

Upon completion of the works, Keskuskatu will form the backbone of Helsinki's
pedestrianised downtown area, linking up with the city's other main pedestrian
precincts. The contract is worth approx. EUR 6.8 million and the work will be
carried in the years 2009-2013. 

The proportions and position of Keskuskatu as well as the handsome facades of
its variously aged commercial buildings provide excellent prerequisites for the
creation of a pleasant urban space. According to the City of Helsinki's street
environment plan, Keskuskatu will be developed by emphasising its existing
strengths and inherent cityscape qualities. 

The timetable for the pedestrianisation works is tied to the expansion projects
for the Stockmann and Makkaratalo city blocks. Lemminkäinen has also taken part
in the construction of an underground tunnel serving these city blocks. The aim
is to eliminate goods traffic almost entirely from Keskuskatu by means of the
service tunnel arrangements. 

The City of Helsinki's Public Works Department started planning the
pedestrianisation of Keskuskatu in September 2005.
