YIT'S RESPONSE TO ENERGY SAVING OBJECTIVES: LOW-ENERGY HOUSES IN FINLAND

YIT will fight the climate change by adopting low-energy building in housing production in Finland. Thanks to the corporation's strong building systems expertise, many energy-saving solutions have already been used in several YIT projects; this expertise will enable a valid response to the current energy saving objectives. By creating clear energy saving goals, Finland's largest construction company also wishes to challenge other operators in the construction industry to pay attention to energy efficiency.

All new YIT Homes will be low-energy houses
YIT takes up the energy saving challenge by adopting low-energy building in its entire housing production. All YIT Homes planned in 2008 or later will be built as low-energy houses.

– Since the energy efficiency of buildings has a major role in preventing climate change, we will adopt low energy technologies in our entire housing production. We want to show the way to the entire industry while cutting consumers' energy costs, says President Ilpo Jalasjoki from Construction Services Finland.

Building systems expertise a qualification for low-energy construction
Strong internal building systems expertise is a firm basis for improving energy efficiency. YIT Building Systems is the leading producer of heating, plumbing, air conditioning, electricity and automation systems in the Nordic countries.

– YIT has already used many energy-saving solutions in its earlier housing projects. These solutions include remote monitoring, apartment-specific measuring of temperature and water, and cooling with seawater, Jalasjoki explains.

Additional energy savings on regional level and with everyday routines
YIT measures apply not only to individual houses but also to entire regions. As a developer of large residential areas, YIT also observes energy consumption in the planning of district heating, waste management, services and traffic connection. In addition, YIT aims at influencing the residents' routines to cut energy consumption. In 2008, a guide will be published with practical information and tips for achieving lower energy consumption in homes.

– This year, we will organise an YIT energy day for experts, and will challenge other companies in the construction industry to the energy saving project, Jalasjoki says.
